The various essays were penned during the last two decades and assembled as a collection at the request of Bill Harnum, vice-president scholarly publishing , and Gerald Hallowell, former history editor at the University of Toronto. The book represents research conducted by one of Canada's foremost scholars on Aboriginal history and gives hints as to how his thinking progressed during the time period represented by these writings. Miller tackles a variety of topics pertaining to matters affecting Canada's First Nations, including historiography, government Indian policy, Indigenous lobbying in England, the role of the Crown in Indian affairs, treaties, and the relation of Native people and the academy.

Miller is quite forthright in discussing controversial subjects such as shifting notions of historical understanding, Oka and the land claims process, and the documentation of Indian residential schools. Naturally, the book has elements of redundancy. Some topics seem to come up quite frequently, albeit in connection with different time frames. An index would have alerted readers regarding when these repetitions could be expected. A case in point is the discussion of residential schools which appears in connection with Miller's analysis of Canadian Indian policy p.
